Hey, all,
Happy Friday! I am so ridiculously happy and honored to have Sarah here. She's an extraordinary writer, teacher and human, and I'm so thrilled she agreed to be here to give feedback to you today!
I was especially excited for the release of Sarah's awesome new picture book, JUST LIKE RUBE GOLDBERG, because, from a young age, my parents taught me about him, and his name became like Kleenex-for-tissue in our house, a two-word description for anything that was deliciously eccentric, complicated, or complex. Here's a brief description for the book!
Discover how Rube Goldberg followed his dreams to become an award-winning cartoonist, inventor, and even an adjective in the dictionary in this inspiring and funny biographical picture book.
See? An adjective!! Yes!! Just like he was in our house!!!
So, please check out this -- and her other books, order a copy for your classroom or kids, and ask your local library to order it in if they haven't already. A worthy title for any and all collections!!
And now, without further ado, here's Sarah, who, I think, expands on the concept of finding the joy and play in our work as we go along we started talking about last week, and then shares FIVE awesome tips for picture book writing:
Hey there! My name is Sarah, and I like to write in multiple genres.
I didn’t think it was going to be this way.
A couple of years ago, after two YA novels and a MG novel, I took the dramatic (at least to me) step to try and write the genres I didn’t think I was good at. I have talked about this decision a lot over the years. Mostly because it changed my career. And made me a happier writer. But at the time, I didn’t know what was going to happen. All I knew is that my third book sold poorly. My fourth book didn’t sell.
I was having less fun.
I needed to get out of my own way. To learn to play. To be like David Bowie. To embrace the creative life all over again. To think less, write more.
And did I say have more fun?
I really wanted to have more fun.
During the next six months, (and ever since) I totally indulged myself. And it worked. I wrote The Wish List Book One: The Worst Fairy Godmother Ever.
I started an adult novel (that I still have to finish). I wrote a bunch of picture books—some awful. Some didactic. Some pretty good. One of them came like a spark of inspiration. It became Just Like Rube Goldberg—which was published by Beach Lane Books with GORGEOUS illustrations by Robert Neubecker.
The process of making that book taught me a lot. More than five things. But today, let’s talk about the top five things about writing picture books—even if you think you are a novel writer.
#1
Let’s start with the thing everyone talks about when they talk about picture books:
WORD COUNT!
Here is what I learned right off the bat: Short word count is not a demotion. It is a challenge to get to the heart of the story. To embrace THE FORM.
A short word count helps create better pacing.
(Don’t you hate it when you are ready to turn the page for a new illustration, but there are still more words to read???) Remember: picture books (like all books) are cinematic. But unlike novels, they are driven by and inhabited through the pictures. Although the words come first in the submission process, the words cannot interfere with the illustrations.
When I saw Robert’s illustrations taking shape, I deleted words.
Now when I work on my picture books, whether fiction or true stories, I try to make them as short as possible. Because words you don’t need are…well…words you don’t need.
#2
YOU HAVE TO FEEL CONNECTED TO YOUR SUBJECT.
Or in other words: you have to love what you are writing.
Or in other words: your heart must be in your story.
Just like Rube Goldberg is all about Rube. But it is also all about ME. It’s about my ideas about creativity—that are embraced by Rube’s. Every second of the process was FUN. Even when I was frustrated with my own limitations, I was enjoying playing with the words.
If you are not having fun…
If writing is not feeling like ice cream…
If you are making decisions because of THE MARKET. Or BECAUSE SOMEONE TOLD YOU SOME RULE. Stop.
Start a new page.
Find your heart in the process.
(You will thank me later.)
#3
Writing a true story? BACK MATTER MATTERS. Back matter isn’t just a chance to show off how much research I did. Back matter marks the spot where curiosity met process. (Not for nothing, editors like to see that you did your work.) TRUE STORY: when I was researching Rube, I actually found ANOTHER STORY. But mostly, thinking about back matter made me think more about my reader. There was a lot more I could have shared. I created back matter and a bibliography knowing that my readers would be curious, too. I want them to keep learning after they are done reading, since the book couldn’t be about everything.
Note: I will be on a panel talking about this at NCTE. Come say hi!
#4
TAKE THE TIME TO MAKE THE DUMMY.
See your story on the page.
Draw bad drawings.
Read your book and turn the page.
My first Rube Dummy showed me where I needed to show more.
The dummy I just made for my new secret project which I cannot announce yet (Shhhhhhhhhhhhh), showed me where I was overindulging and writing too many words that I did not need. When I cut those words, THE BOOK SOLD.
LAST and MOST IMPORTANT:
#5
TRUST and CONFIDENCE are ESSENTIAL.
Just like any project, you have to trust yourself.
You have to trust your reader friends.
You have to trust your agent.
You have to trust your editor.
You have to trust your illustrator.
It’s a lot of trust.
And I will admit: I am bossy. I had ideas for Rube. BUT NONE were as good as this:
So that’s it.
Five things.
In less than 1000 words.
And, now, I guess it's my turn to put my words where my mouth is and offer up a brief excerpt for your feedback, inviting you to do the same in the comments!
If you've never participated in Friday Feedback, please first read THE RULES!!!
Here is a piece of a picture book WIP I am working on. I'm actually about to submit it.
It's called As Easy as 1 2 3.
Who is the most exhibited artist in the world?
Would you believe Picasso?
Or maybe Monet?
Or how about Dan Robbins?
Never heard of him? Pull up a chair.
Dan Robbins worked at Detroit’s Palmer Paint Company in early 1950. His Boss, Max Klein, could see the writing on the wall. For the first time, Americans had the time, inclination, and money to take up new hobbies—including art.
He asked Dan to create a coloring book—to drum up sales of children’s paints.
But Dan had a better idea.
He knew that the great master, Leonardo da Vinci, taught his apprentices to create fine art by giving them numbered patterns.
Each number on the canvas corresponded to a unique pigment.
Like 1 for red.
And 2 for yellow.
Dan figured if it worked for Leonardo, it could work for America, too.

So that's it! Looking forward to your comments and your excerpts!!!

oooooh....what a great subject for a picture book. I see a blended genre book coming. A read and color book? I like the connection to DaVinci.
ReplyDeleteI have a question and an excerpt to share that is a specific form. It's a form I shared on my blog today called haibun. Haibun is a combination of a short prose piece and a travel haiku or tanka. I'm wondering if that might have appeal for a PB agent/editor.
I'm pasting my excerpt below. The entire Haibun can be found on my Poetry Friday post for today: https://awordedgewiselindamitchell.blogspot.com/
Road Home
It was done. Blaisha was several days into her journey, recalling events that led to her victory. Gran’s death had been the start, she thought. If Gran were still alive she wouldn’t have left caring for her to travel so far to the king’s court for the contest. At Gran’s burial, Alwin told her of the court's prize offered to the story teller that could best ease the king’s downcast mood and raging headaches.
Blaisha had cared for Gran with herbs and stories these last three years. She believed she could sooth the king given a chance but the walk to court was days. After the funeral, a unbearable silence pushed her to pack a bag and tie her sandals.
By the time Blaisha was announced, His Majesty...
a road less traveled
threads through field to hill to sky
reckons each mile
kindly shade tree and cloud
that walks a traveler home
Thanks for feedback! I took a class with Sarah several years ago and learned a LOT! Thanks for your enthusiasm and encouragement in all places I find you!

Hi Linda! Thank you so much for joining in! I am so intrigued by this form--for all genres. Certainly, a story told in a combination of prose and poetry can work.
ReplyDeleteSo let's look at your opening!
Blaisha seems like a great character. She has a goal--to soothe the king. And a skill--to tell stories.
She seems to be an otherwise every day girl.
She has . lost her Gran.
She wants to help his Majesty.
The glimmer for me: "Unbearable silence." She is a girl of words. Of music? Of sound?
My questions: the backstory seems potent. Is there a potential story there?
Your first action--and first impression--and first verb is "recalling." I challenge you to introduce her in a more active way.
My challenge: What is your story about? In ten words? Or less?
What are the biggest obstacles she faces?
How will she change?
Before we focus on FORM, let's think about the high and low points of the story--and how this form lends itself to telling this story best.
It is lovely writing. Is a picture book enough to contain it? Do you need a longer form to stretch this particular story out?
Thank you for sharing!
Sarah
Ooooh, Linda, very intrigued by all of this (that ^^^)!!! Not much to add to Sarah's awesome feedback. Her comment about "recalling" struck me most. Reminded me of this Chuck Wendig post about starting with the banana. Does this apply to PB's? If so, thinking how active the line is, "It started with Gran's death." BANANA! ? http://terribleminds.com/ramble/2012/11/14/why-stories-should-never-begin-at-the-beginning/
DeleteI also love this tidbit of feedback: "The glimmer for me: "Unbearable silence." She is a girl of words. Of music? Of sound? "
How did you feel when you wrote that word? When you imagined that unbearable silence? That is a glimmer you should mine!!!!
DeleteThanks to you both. Great article about skipping the peel...getting right to the banana.

ReplyDeleteSarah, thank you for sharing. Your new WIP sounds incredible. My students will love it. Love all the different advice too.
ReplyDeleteMy piece of sharing comes from a YA novel. I’m working on two this summer. This is from my contemporary one. The MC has just found a body in the river.
I sunk my feet down into the river bottom and held on to the body until help arrived.
“You okay?” Dell asked.
“Yep. You aren’t looking are you?”
“No. Keep talking to me Jury so I know the river ain’t got you.”
“The river’s not getting me, Dell. I told you we have an understanding.”
“You can’t trust the river, Gram says so. You need to talk, Jury or I’m looking.”
I don’t need another round of Dell’s nightmares. So I talked about how I’m glad summer vacation has started.
“And you and Truman can go fishing every day.”
I looked down at Truman’s bloated bossy and wondered how you go fishing with a dead man.
Thanks so much for your thoughts. Best wishes on your writing.
Hi Martha! Thank you! And thank you for joining us.
ReplyDeleteOooooh, I am intrigued.
These short sentences add a lot of tension. (I always recommend looking at your novel as a physical being. Are there moments of long prose? White space? Dialogue? This kind of passage heightens our awareness because it sounds, reads and looks different.
So without knowing much--Dell is your MC?
What does he want? Why? What are his misbeliefs?
This setting is really singing!
How does finding this dead body change everything? How does it change the trajectory of the novel?
Think ACTION REACTION! What does he do next???? Who is Jury? What does he/she want? Misbeliefs? Why is he/she in this scene? What is their backstory???
Why is this story important for you to tell? Want to discuss???
Thanks for sharing!
Martha, so good. Agree about those short sentences that pack so much punhc about your characters. Also, the names: Jury and Dell?! Those feel perfect to me. Sarah asks great "character" questions that always, always lead to story. Keep going! <3

Gae and Sarah-
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for Friday Feedback. I love your idea, and I can envision the pictures.I really appreciate the advice you have listed, too. I have been working on a Tongan folktale. My husband and I adopted two children from Tonga. There are very few children's book from Tonga. I have done the research, hired an editor, and I have done a dummy book with pictures. I do think that I need to take out some words, but I also feel that folktales are a bit longer. I would love your feedback on the opening pages. (There will be a glossary)
Among the scattered islands of Polynesia, there are many legends and myths. One such myth comes from the island of Tonga.
Grandfather (Kui) stood in his workshop. A canoe (popao) was being carved out from the trunk of a kamani tree. A tiki carving was on a small table, and shelves were stacked with coconut bowls and other carvings. Dust rose and fell as grandfather sanded the tip of a long pole. The young boy stood close, waiting for the old man to notice him. Grandfather looked up, a small smile on his face.
“Nakai,” he said, “Let me show you something. Come closer. See what I have done.” Nakai reached up to touch the tip of the wooden javelin.
“It is very sharp,” said Nakai.
“Yes, it is. This is called a ‘sika’, and I am going to tell you the story of ‘Ahe’eitu and his father, Tangaloa, which my grandfather told me, and someday, Nakai, if your memory is as sharp as your eyes, you will tell this story to your grandchildren.”
---------------------------------------------------------
Far above the earth--where the sky is as blue as the feathers of a kingfisher bird, and even above the fluffiest clouds, where even the tallest trees do not reach--lived Tangaloa, the Great God of the Sky.
Tangaloa amused himself by observing the earth below. Sometimes, he would lie on a cloud and push his hands through the soft white mist to peer down to the earth. He enjoyed looking at the sweeping deserts, the jagged mountains, or gazing at the cold arctic glaciers. Staring below, he wished to visit the earth as a man. He was most curious about the people who walked about the earth and how these human beings lived.
The sea delighted Tangaloa the most. When the dolphins played together, or the whales sprayed water like fountains, he longed to join in too. And why couldn’t he? Where should he go first? There are so many beautiful places on the earth.
More than once he had gazed at a blue lagoon where a girl gathered seaweed (limu) to dry, and sometimes he saw this girl pulling in a net with fish. “Ah, how beautiful she is!” he thought. She had big brown eyes and long, wavy hair, dark as the darkest part of the ocean floor, which caused Tangaloa’s heart to leap. A wreath of sweet-smelling hibiscus and heilala crowned her head. Her name was Va’epopua.
One day he made a decision. He would visit earth by following his heart to the blue lagoon in hopes of a glimpse of Va’epopua. Just as expected, Va’epopua came to the lagoon. She noticed Tangaloa standing behind a palm tree. Not hard to miss, Tangaloa was like a giant, six and a half feet tall, and built like an ox.
Curious and friendly, she greeted him, “Malo e lelei (hello), would you like to gather seaweed, and help catch some shellfish for dinner with me?” Tangaloa agreed eagerly to help Va’epopua. He hoped she would see his desire to spend time with her.
Each morning, Tangaloa would come down from the sky to meet Va’epopua at the lagoon where he quickly learned the ways of the land. He enjoyed her pleasant voice and musical laugh. He was falling deeply in love with Va’epopua.
Hi Kay! Thanks for your comment and for submitting! I love folk tales. Just as I was walking this morning, we were talking about all the BIG issues that folktales introduce. They are universal and specific at once!
ReplyDeleteYour opening evokes the universal and specific. The language pulls me into the world of the story. But the glimmer is THE GIANT. I also like your voice here.
But word count isn't a rule for nothing. The big question is: are you leaving room for the illustrator?
Marci Colleen just posted an article she wrote about this very subject. When I was writing Rube, there were lots of lines I had to give up--because they were dictating images for the illustrator--and I wanted the final product to offer layers of meaning.
So, are there lines you can give up? YES. There almost always are.
Do you need a frame to tell this story?
When I know I need to cut--but I don't know what to cut--I set a goal to decrease my word count by 1/3. That may seem like a lot of words, but be bold! Do it. When you are done, see what you've got. Then start to put back the words that make the narrative unique!
Good luck! We need stories like this!
Thank you so much for your feedback. I know authors frequently comment they had to cut out some of their most favorite passages. I do not need the frame story; we used Nakai as this is our grandson who was just born this year from our son who is adopted. But for sure, I do need to cut out. Thanks again! I love your book!
DeleteThank you! One of my darlings was this: Rube was left handed, but people wanted him to write with his right. (But he always drew with his left.) Now I tell kids about that in my school visits!
DeleteI'm not the PB expert here at all, UNDERSTATEMENT, so just giving you one gut comment (besides I love this and love that you are writing a book for your Tongan children. Here's my thought/question. In this sentence here:
DeleteThe young boy stood close. . . why not name him -- Nakai -- right there? It takes us right to him/right into the story. HIS story. Of listening to his Grandfather's story. Wonder if there's a reason you choose up front to call him the boy. And Sarah, feel free to disagree with me!!!
Good work, Kayb. Keep going!
So, I love when, in workshop, we start exploring different options. Every story offers many options. (I have an alternate beginning for mine, too.)
DeleteMy question always is: what does it add to the story?
Does it distract?
The opening of a picture book should answer a lot of W's:
who is the story about?
where does it take place?
When is it happening?
What is happening?
All that comes before you worry about gorgeous writing!
I also like to think about the ending: is my beginning establishing a vector that leads to the end???
Once you've thought about these things, you can decide exactly where your PB starts. You have the skills. You have the story! This is a discussion about tone and choices!
Hi Sarah - I have always loved RG. I remember getting books with his cartoons out of the library as a kid. Last year, I worked with my 5/6 grade teaching team and our kids all designed their own RG machines. They had a ball!
ReplyDeleteI have also always loved books that taught me about the origins of everyday items. I did not know the DaVinci connection to paint by number. Fascinating! My adult son has autism, and he loves to color by number (and I love to do it with him). It calms him, and I think he likes the order of having the color choices already made. I hope your book will have a section or even a companion volume for coloring. I look forward to its publication.
I have nothing to contribute today, but I thank you and Gae for giving your time to help the writing community.
This previous comment is mine. I don't know why I'm being listed as "Unknown." I'm signed in.
Delete-David Cassidy
Hi, David,
DeleteThanks for chiming in. Your presence here at FF over the years has meant so much to me! Glad you identified yourself.
Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI am LOVING learning about Paint By Numbers. (I need to find my old Mona Lisa with red hair!) What a great thing to do with your son! Just like in writing, structure is freedom! Paint by Numbers inspired a lot of people to paint. My fingers are crossed for this story!
Oh how I love this. I am always so envious of ideas that are novel like this. I think there are no original plots left and then this. So good. My kids and students love learning facts like this and about little known people, as if being famous but not really famous is intriguing. I can't wait to see it and hope that it is interactive with pull out pages to color. I have discovered colored pencils and coloring again. So relaxing.
ReplyDeleteMy WIP is from my memoir Yield that I shared a section of before
“I can’t veed!” I tried to speak clearly. The words were there but took so long to say and when I heard them I wanted to cover my mouth, so shocked by the sound of my own voice but my arms did not answer my demands.
“We know you have asthma. We will give you a breathing treatment as soon as we get to the hospital…”
“No. Wain. The wain!” Gargle. Gargle. What the hell is that? Why can't he stop the rain from drowning me?
“Just swallow it for now honey. You’ll be OK. It won’t hurt you. I’ll suction you. We have some work to do here first. We’ll be pulling out in just a minute. Now here’s a big stick in your hand, sorry.”
The familiar stick of the IV in my hand and the wads and wads of tape that would be impossible to remove later made me cry out. Again the crying sent waves of rain rushing down my throat. IVs were familiar to me because my asthma had gotten worse in the last year and I was rushed by ambulance many times with an IV and a shot of epinephrine.
“You ever had an IV before?”
“Yeah.” Something was wet and lying across my teeth, that was why I couldn’t breathe. Why couldn’t he see it? Move this thing so I can talk. It is leaking all over my face and down my throat. What was it? Why couldn’t he see it?
“But not from a Chicago Paramedic, right? It’s all done.” He patted my arm. “You need to keep real still now. Just relax.”
The radio crackled. The driver was speaking. “Level two trauma…white eighteen year old female…unrestrained front passenger…head on…windshield broken out…severe facial lacerations…shock…driver uninjured…second passenger also uninjured…unrestrained behind passenger. Seat broken out...Lutheran General Hospital…OK…
“Do you know what happened?”
This accident had happened like a gotcha from life. A who did you think you were slap in the face. Plans? Not for you. A get back here pull of my collar that lifted me off of my feet landing me flat on my back strapped to a gurney with my face bleeding down my neck and collecting on my back. A seeping pool of blood I could recollect from my dream. It was me.
Hi Diane! Thank you so much for your kind words--and sharing this bit of your memoir. WOW. I am a former head injury physical therapist, My first novel was about a boy who was in a car accident and suffered a spinal cord injury. It's called Head Case.
DeleteSo this is compelling
And scary.
I am not sure what precedes this, but these kinds of scenes definitely hook this reader.
Do we see the accident happen?
Are we in it?
How are you showing it?
My ONE suggestion: I am not a reader who likes dialects/speech language disorders in between the quotation marks. Use the beats outside the quotation to describe her frustration speaking. To make us feel her pain. But dialogue like "No. Wain. The wain!” confuses me and takes me out of the action.
I'd love to talk to you about this!!! Email me!

Hi viewers online, I'm Alfonso Vázquez from Mexico. I'm here to share my testimony about how i was helped to get my wife back. I was a cheat and my wife caught me several times. I tried fixing myself and each time i ended up cheating over and over again. I guess i didn't realise what she meant to me until she had left me alone. I began to find a way to get her back but nothing seems to work out perfectly till i came across an article about Lord Zakuza who helped a lot of people globally to get their relationships back. I made contact with him on his WhatsApp number via +1 740-573-9483 and he assured me that my wife will come back to me within 48 hours with his powerful magics and i paid 410 Euros for the materials needed for the work. Surprisingly, my wife came back home after 2 days saying that she still loves me and i swore never to cheat on her anymore. All thanks to Lord Zakuza. Email him via ( lordzakuza7@gmail.com ) or WhatsApp number via +1 740-573-9483.
